Open Your Parachute

By Asa Leveaux

What exactly is an entrepreneur?

One of the best responses to this question is:

"An entrepreneur is a person that leaps off a mountain and builds their parachute on the way down."

Does this not sound scary as fuck to anyone other than me?!

I decided to analyze that definition and see if it worked for me since I have been an entrepreneur for over a decade. Another reason why I wanted to dissect it is because I help entrepreneurs for a living.

Let's take the first part of this saying...

It says that an entrepreneur is a person that leaps of a mountain. That caught my attention. The reason why it did is because most times aspiring entrepreneurs don't identify with having a mountain top experience when they take the proverbial leap. To the contrary, they often feel as though their lives, in some way, are in shambles and that entrepreneurship is the answer to their prayers. However, to start a business you must have a internal mountain top experience taking place simply because you believe that you can make it work AND that you will.

Now let's talk about that parachute part...

What happens if that parachute never actually is able to be built while you are in free fall? I know what happens. How do I know? I know because I have lived the "splat of life". I have started a business with no or low level of support which resulted in a very public incident. There is often a badge of honor placed on bootstrapped entrepreneurship and I understand why. However, this doesn't have to be your avenue of approach because there is nothing wrong with seeking and receiving the help that you need and deserve when it comes to building a business that works for you.

What is the parachute?

The parachute in a nutshell is the system. I have learned that there are 5 key components of the system which are the following:

  • Marketing
  • Sales
  • Finance
  • Operations
  • Accountability
These key aspects, once understand and implemented will be the saving grace of you and your business.
